Chinese dialects are spoken by an estimated 1 billion
people around the world. There are hundreds of different
Chinese dialects which can vary from one village to the next.
The two most widely spoken dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese,
with Mandarin spoken in the People's Republic of China, Singapore
and Taiwan, and Cantonese by residents in Hong Kong (now part
of the People's Republic of China), Macau, Taipei and many overseas
Chinese communities. Statistics indicate that the majority of
Chinese expatriates living in Australia speak Cantonese.
The two commonly written forms of Chinese are Simplified
Chinese Script and Traditional Chinese Script. Simplified
and Traditional Scripts cannot be simply classified under Mandarin
and Cantonese speakers, as Simplified Chinese is used in Mainland
China, while Traditional Chinese is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong,
Macau, and Singapore. Historically, all Chinese script was written
in Traditional Chinese. When the People's Republic of China was
established, however, the Chinese government reformed and simplified
the script into what we now call Simplified Chinese. That is why
only Mainland China uses Simplified Chinese, and other regions
still use the original Traditional Chinese. Nevertheless, Simplified
Chinese currently represents the most users due to its overwhelming
population.
When conducting English to Chinese translations,
we are attentive to the geographical location of your target audience.
In order to ensure that your translation is conducted into the
correct script (Simplified or Traditional script), the appropriate
translator is carefully selected for the project. When performing
English to Chinese translations, we are often asked to translate
a document into both Simplified and Traditional Scripts in order
to accommodate a broad cross section of the Chinese community.
We have at your disposal a team of highly qualified,
experienced and specialised Chinese translators. We offer
a comprehensive Chinese translation service covering a variety
of specialist fields, including scientific, technical, legal,
contracts, commercial/promotional, etc. We also offer typesetting and printing
services for brochures, Power Point Presentations and other professionally
produced materials.
Our Chinese translators are located both in Australia
and overseas. We assign projects to Chinese translators
according to key factors such as accreditation, area of expertise
and the translator’s country of residence. We ensure that
a Chinese translation will read as well or even better than the
source document by carefully assigning the most appropriate translator
for the project; fluency in the latest cultural and business terminology
for your target audience is essential. Furthermore, all of
our Chinese translations undergo proofreading to ensure accuracy.
Chinese to English and English to Chinese typesetting considerations
When translating from one language to another,
the amount of text/characters will either increase or decrease.
This expansion and contraction will vary depending upon subject
matter. English to Chinese translation often results in less space
required for characters. Accordingly, a Chinese to English translation
will often result in more space being required for the English
text. This is, of course, a general rule, but should be factored
in when preparing copy that is to be typeset following translation.
There are no other significant typesetting considerations to be
made when preparing copy for translation from Chinese to English
or English to Chinese.
